About the Artist
Biography
Jeramy Fletcher is an award-winning, self-taught contemporary oil painter whose work explores the evocative intersections of nature, human absence, and memory. Originally deeply influenced by the weathered relics of the American South from his roots in Georgia and Louisiana, he now synthesizes these early visual memories with the dense, atmospheric psychology of the Maine wilderness from his current studio practice in New Jersey.
Fletcher’s distinct surrealist landscapes have earned him critical acclaim, most notably receiving the prestigious Top Painting Award at the Greenwich Art Society’s 109th Annual Juried Exhibition, selected by guest juror Caitlin Chaisson of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). His artwork is represented in notable institutional and private collections, including the permanent collection of Howl! Arts Archive in New York City and the Arturo Vega Collection. Operating outside traditional academic frameworks, his paintings serve as richly layered, intuitive meditations on the thin veil between the mundane and the mysterious, translating deeply personal history into universal, symbolic narratives.
Artist Statement
I paint places that don’t exist—but feel like they could. My work begins with real places, especially the Maine wilderness, but moves beyond description into a deeper psychological space. Silent forests, burning homes, and hooded figures with fragmented faces inhabit my canvases. My paintings are characterized by their richly layered textures, bold use of color, and jewel-like tones which give them a sense of depth, vitality, and narrative weight.
My visual language is rooted in atmospheric psychology, modern allegory, and contemporary myth-making, driven by a lifelong fascination with trees, forests, and structures left to weather and disappear—an obsession that began during my childhood, watching abandoned houses, barns, and derelict properties drift past car windows along the highways and back roads of Georgia and Louisiana. These forgotten structures, stranded in vast, rolling landscapes, felt lonely but alive. They held the ghosts of past lives while welcoming the vines and wildlife making a home within them. Current works, such as The Maine House, directly connect to this history of quiet, nostalgic observation.
In these paintings, nature is never just a background; it is the dominant force slowly reclaiming what was built within it. Working intuitively from internal images rather than literal references, I use light, color, and softened edges to build tension between beauty and unease. Ultimately, my work explores memory, impermanence, ritual, and the shifting, mysterious relationship between people and the landscapes they inhabit.
